Po II. SV začalo být v medicínském výzkumu populární užívání randomized controlled trials (RCT), tedy testování nových léčiv tak, aby se dokázal odlišit jejich vliv od ostatních ovlivňujících faktorů.
Shodou okolností, tou dobou vzrostl akademický zájem o placebo efekt, který poháněl H. K. Beecher. Jeho závěry o bombastickém efektu placeba jsou dnes už vyvráceny, ale ve své době způsobily celou vlnu výzkumů placeba a i dodnes se ozvěny jeho chápání placebo efektu nesou společností.
